Twenty-one years after the NHS vacated the old Royal Infirmary in 2003, David Bryce’s original 1879 complex has been brought back to life as the University of Edinburgh’s Futures Institute. After many years of decay, the building has been mended and amended, with removal of alien extensions, extensive repairs and insertion of new structures, including a 450-seat auditorium beneath a public square.
