The abstracted diptych collage painting suggests a possible colour strategy for east side of Cables Wynd House, Leith. The proposed strategy, Warp and Weft, draws on design methods and textiles of 1960s designer, Bernat Klein, to introduce an irregularity into the application. Colour weaves along and down the elevation, appearing and disappearing. The aim is to draw attention to the existing architectural form and rhythms using a familiar palette of tones of terracotta, ochre, and greens drawn from the surroundings. The building facade is experienced at an acute angle. Looking north, colour is applied to the balcony sides to catch the sunlight, looking south, the application is more restrained. The collage was made to stimulate discussion with architects, residents and key stakeholders as part of an energy retrofit project driven by fuel poverty and addresses the theme of critical action by suggesting a possible use of colour as an affective agent in the project.
