Joanna Holisz is an artist who is curious about the gap between image and intention. Swimming in the impossibility of translation, she imagines landscapes half-heartedly, thinking about how habit and material control what surfaces. (Re)iterated marks work to punctuate an ongoingness in practice. Each painting is a journal entry, making up part of a perpetual whole/hole.
These works are made using oil paint on paper. The smoothness of the paper surface allows layers of paint to accumulate without losing lucidity. The paint seems to sit on top of the surface rather than seeping into it, creating an appearance of provisionality and a lack of preciousness. The works are placed in conversation rather than competing for status.
