Aleksandra Zawada graduated from Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art in 2011. She lives and works in Edinburgh. She works across painting, photography and sculpture.
Since 2018 her work has concentrated on sculpture (ceramic and recently bronze). Her works are executed with economy, modest in scale, with few, sparse details. Minimal, not overworked forms are deliberate and playful. Her works are figurative, totemic looking with distinctive style and often humour.
AZ pieces are hand-built from mainly raku clay, hand painted with glazes that reference historical glazes seen in museum collections in Japan and China; and those resembling finishes of ancient bronze sculptures. Bronze cast is handmade by the artist using a ceramic shell casting.
