Jane Hyslop RSA (Elect)

Jane Hyslop RSA (Elect) employs a range of mediums making artist’s books and works on paper combining natural and human histories by investigating points of tension where these different worlds meet. Place and identity are central to her work and subject matter is often sourced in her native Midlothian.

She develops these themes through intensive study involving observational drawing, reading, topographic study and material experimentation brought together in works which visually express narratives and detail findings. Often ideas are conveyed through examining the flora that inhabits particular sites. Examples of this include research into the history of Scottish gardens, the cultivation of specimen plants over indigenous ones and the  development of Scotland’s linen industry.
